About Us

Four years ago a group of Merrill residents, led by Gene Bebel, retired school administrator, established the River District Development Foundation of Merrill. The goal was to develop a pedestrian and bike trail along the Wisconsin River in the city. The National Park Service provided $25,000 in technical planning and community design services and the project began.

The Foundation and the City became partners in April 2013 through a resolution of support. The historic New Wood Line rail corridor on the Wisconsin River was purchased with Stewardship funds and private donations. As sponsoring donors, the Nicklaus Family funded the renovation of the Prairie River railroad bridge with AGRA Industries as contractor and donor. Contributions by Merrill Rotary Club and donors from all segments are funding construction.

The overall plan is to link Council Ground State Park, Merrill Area Recreation Center and the new swimming pool with downtown and all community features along the 2.5-mile stretch.

We’re pleased to have you visit and look at what the Merrill community is doing with its River Bend Trail.
